Dental Implants- An Overview

Dental implants are the artificial replacement of missing teeth with natural-looking porcelain implants. These implants present a superior alternative to dentures, which wear down the gums and cause bone loss in the jaw. Another alternative to implants are dental bridges, which require adjacent teeth to be covered by crowns.

Dental implant surgery is a healthier alternative for patients who want a natural looking remedy for missing teeth, enhanced facial features, and a more even bite. The design and requirements for implants are determined on a case-by-case basis by a team of trained and experienced dental professionals. The goal of any implant surgery is to successfully place an artificial tooth into the location of the patient’s missing tooth. Implants require multiple appointments, and can take anywhere from six months to several years to complete. Patients who are in good health undergo dental implant surgery without any major complications. Dentists carefully evaluate and assess the success ratio for smokers, diabetics, and patients with chronic disorders before diagnosing and proceeding with any implant procedures.

After the patient has been diagnosed and a treatment plan has been generated, the tooth root implant (a small titanium post) is placed in the bone socket of the missing tooth. The growth of the jawbone allows it to secure the post in place just as a natural tooth root would be. A connecter post is then attached to the root post and holds the new natural-looking porcelain crown in place. The surgical process alleviates any pain with the use of local anaesthesia.

Implanted teeth have a high success ratio with those patients who have healthy oral hygiene. With proper care, maintenance and consistent post-operation dental visits, dental implants can last a lifetime.
